Bowe skates to first US Speedskating top-10 long track finish in Beijing in women’s 1500m, Heo scores 7th place in men’s short track 1000m

Brittany Bowe scored the first US Speedskating long track top-10 finish of the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games this Monday morning with a 10th place time of 1:55.81 in the Women’s 1500m event at the National Speed Skating Oval.
The Netherlands’ Ireen Wust won the Gold Medal with a new Olympic Record time of 1:53.28, Japan’s Miho Takagi won Silver with a time of 1:53.72 and the Netherlands’ Antoinette de Jong won Bronze with a time of 1:54.82.
Bowe said the staggered nature of her remaining races is an advantage.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to rep the United States and I’m going to just take a rest day tomorrow to recover and reset,” Bowe said. “I’m looking forward to the 500m to work on that speed and then the big focus is at the end of the competition for that 1000m.”
Andrew Heo was the highest-ranking short track finisher for Team USA - placing third in the B Final of the Men’s 1000m for an 7th place finish overall at Beijing's Capital Indoor Stadium later Monday morning.
China took the top two spots in the final, as Ren Ziwei claimed the Gold Medal and Li Wenlong earned Silver. Shaoang Liu of Hungary won the Bronze.
Mia Manganello Kilburg finished 20th with a time of 1:59.11 for her best-ever Olympic showing in the 1500m long track distance – topping a 22nd place finish in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games.
The two-time Olympian previously finished 19th in the Women’s 3000m in her first Beijing 2022 event.
With two Beijing events now behind her, Manganello Kilburg said she can take lessons like endurance and finding her feet from the 3000m and the pure speed and rhythm of the 1500m to apply to the upcoming Women’s Mass Start.
“After these past two events, I definitely feel a bit more connected to my skates than I have been since we got here,” Manganello Kilburg said. “I think that will help me become a bit more calm and comfortable within training and build some confidence.”
Bowe and Manganello Kilburg previously teamed up to win a Bronze Medal in the Women’s Team Pursuit alongside Carlijn Schoutens and Heather Bergsma at PyeongChang 2018.
Ryan Pivirotto caught the tip of his skate in the ice at the start of his short track 1000m quarterfinal race and went down, effectively taking him out of contention.
“I was just trying to feel my start out, really. I took a good first step and I think it was my left that I toe picked on.” Pivirotto said. “I was just focused on staying onto the guys because I knew it was going to be hard.”
In the women's 500m, Maame Biney placed third in her quarterfinal heat and did not advance, while Kristen Santos was assessed a penalty in her heat. Arianna Fontana won the Gold medal for Italy, Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands took the Silver and Canada's Kim Boutin won Bronze.
US Speedskating long track Olympic action continues Tuesday with the Men’s 1500m event scheduled for 6:30 pm Beijing time and 3:30 am MST/5:30 am EST Tuesday in the United States. Short Track action will resume Wednesday with the Men’s 1500m Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals, Women’s 1000m Heats and Women’s 3000m Relay Semifinals.
