Short Track World Cup season wraps up in the Netherlands

by US Speedskating

The world’s top short track speed skaters competed this weekend in Dordrecht, Netherlands from November 25-28. This four-day competition was the final Olympic qualifying event with athletes battling for key start positions ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Team USA started strong with
Corinne Stoddard (Tacoma, WA) and Kristen Santos (Fairfield, CT) qualifying for the semifinals in the women’s 1500m. Santos advanced to the A Final and finished just off the podium coming in 4th place in a time of (2:22.107). Stoddard finished in 20th place.

On the men’s side,
Ryan Pivirotto (Ann Arbor, MI) and Brandon Kim (Fairfax, VA) advanced to the 1500m quarterfinals but neither made it through to the semifinal round.

“So we’ve been on the road for about six weeks now and I think mentally it’s been a struggle for me and the team. I see a lot of people tired and exhausted after just travel alone but for the four World Cups I think we performed well; the women performed exceptionally well and  the men had a few good performances and I think after all this I’m just ready to go home, take a few weeks to get ready for Olympic Trials and to go out and compete for those [Olympic] spots.” commented Ryan Pivirotto.

In the Women’s 500m, Santos made it to the B Final finishing 7th and Stoddard finishing in 18th place. Kim advanced to the quarterfinals in the Men’s 500m and finished in 13th place.

Santos continued her impressive skating in the 1000m picking up a 7th place finish. Santos ends the World Cup Season as the 2nd ranked 1000m skater in the World. Stoddard posted a series of strong races, advancing to the B Final and a 10th place finish. For the men, Kim qualified for the quarterfinals in the 1000m ending up in 19th place.

USA’s Women’s Relay Team continued their strong showing on the season finishing in 6th place. The women’s team ended the World Cup Season in 7th place in the overall rankings qualifying them for the Olympic Games. USA’s Mixed Gender Relay Team finished in 11th place also qualifying for the Olympic Games.

With the completion of the 2021-2022 World Cup series, the Short Track Team is in full preparation for the Short Track US Olympic Team Trials taking place on the Fastest Ice on Earth at the Utah Olympic Oval December 17-19, 2021.
