World Champion Weekend for Long Track

Team USA kicked off an eventful weekend on Thursday the 11th with Ethan Cepuran (Glen Elyn Il.) competing in the Men’s 5000m. Cepuran finished in the time of (6:28.44) which placed him in 15th. This is the first time since 2013 that a man from the U.S. has skated in this event at the World Championships!
Next up was Brittany Bowe (Ocala, Fl.) competing in the 500m on Friday the 12th, this would be the first out of three events Bowe would compete in this weekend. With a top ten finish, Bowe finished in 8th and crossed the line in a time of (37.98). She was the only member competing for Team USA on Friday, making it a quick and successful day.
The third day of racing was jam-packed with action for Team USA. Joey Mantia (Ocala, Fl.) and Ian Quinn (St. Louis, MI.) started off in the Men’s Mass Start Semi-Finals. Mantia made it out of his Semi-Final heat to compete later in the Final, while Quinn was unable to. During the Final, Mantia stayed strategic throughout the whole race and it paid off. With a lap to go he took off in a final sprint, and was able to bring home his third World Championship Title in this event!
“I was more confident than I've ever been going into any race. I just felt incredible the entire week leading up to the mass start in terms of my technique, and I knew that I was on top of everything that I could control to that point.” Mantia commented. “The race ended up unfolding in a way that was perfect for me, and I was able to capitalize.”
Bowe was then up again in her second event of the weekend in the Women’s 1000m. She was racing head-to-head with the reigning 2019 World Champion. Bowe came out on top and took home the Gold Medal, and World Champion Title. This was her third time becoming World Champion in the 1000m, winning her first in 2015 and second in 2019. Following Bowe was Conor McDermott-Mostowy (Washington, D.C.) competing in his first World Championship event. He started off his weekend in the Men’s 1000m, completing his race in a time of (1:10.43) placing him in 17th.
The final day of World Championships was filled only with the 1500m for the U.S. Bowe kicked off the races by placing second in the Women’s 1500m with the time of (1:55.03), finishing (0.42) off the top podium spot. Up next were teammates Cepuran, McDermott-Mostowy and Mantia in their final races of the weekend. Cepuran crossed the line in a time of (1:49.10) placing him respectively in 22nd. Finishing just ahead of Cepuran, was McDermott-Mostowy in 21st with a time of (1:48.83). Mantia finished off the weekend with a top five finish in a time of (1:45.68), and just (0.18) off the podium for the Men’s 1500m.
“This was an incredible World Championships! Every athlete put everything they had into each race and we were lucky enough to walk away with 3 medals!” Coach Matt Kooreman said. “I'm so grateful for all the USS families that put some much love and effort into each of these athletes as well as our incredible partners at the Utah Olympic Oval who went to great lengths to provide training opportunities for our teams! I was also able to live a lifelong dream of skating on Dutch canal!”
