Bay State Speedskating is the August Feature Club

August’s Feature Club of the Month is Bay State Speedskating Club (BSSC). Located in Walpole and Wellesley, Massachusetts, Bay State is a club for everyone interested in short track speed skating, regardless of age or ability.
Being the only club in the Massachusetts/Rhode Island area, Bay State has skaters travel from both states (and even some from the New Hampshire/Vermont area) to train with them.
As a registered 501 c(3) charitable non-profit organization, the club is dedicated to introducing people of all ages and abilities to the sport they refer to on their website as “Nascar on ice.”
With its rich speed skating history dating back to the 1940’s and their nationally-certified coaching staff, Bay State is committed to helping each and every skater achieve their own speed tskating goals whether that's wanting to improve and just skate for fun or be competitive and race at regional and national events.
“At the club, one of our biggest goals is to provide a fun and positive team environment for all athletes. Being in a densely populated hockey centric state, we provide another avenue for athletes who want to continue skating but who do not necessarily want to play hockey or go into figure skating. We have athletes of all ages with our youngest being 5 years old all the way to our Masters 60+ skaters,” said Head Coach Jerebelle Yutangco.
Yutangco has been head coach of Bay State since January of 2018. Prior to that, she grew up skating with Bay State herself and was also an elite athlete competing and representing the US on the National and International stages.
Some of her successes include being a member of the US World Cup Team, University Games Team and competing in 2 Olympic Trials (2014, 2018). She has also trained under many National and Olympic level coaches, and is currently a Level 2 USS Certified Coach and an Athlete Representative on the Medical Commission Board for US Speedskating.
“The club prides itself on being a family-focused team; we have many families on the ice with us for all sessions. Whether it's moms or dads skating with their son/daughter or whether it's having 5 siblings all sharing the ice together, it makes for a truly fun time for everyone involved. In addition to having athletes join us from hockey and figure skating, we also have other athletes that have joined us via inlining, cycling, and even cross country skiing! Regardless of age or ability, we strive to provide an enjoyable learning environment where they can grow, excel, and have a ton of fun,” Yutangco explained.
