FTSST hosted their inaugural Sprint Cup this past weekend! We are so thankful to our parents & volunteers, and the parents & volunteers from Northbrook, Champaign, Gateway, Wolverine, and Lakewood. FTSST was determined to try some new ideas and appreciate the athletes participating!

On Saturday evening, FTSST hosted a pre-race camp where over 30 skaters attended. The skaters, of all different skill levels, shared the ice and learned new drills and techniques and support was provided by the coaches in attendance as well. It was a great way to bring all the clubs and skaters together to share the ice and have fun together.

While the skaters were on the ice, FTSST hosted an equipment seminar for parents were we talked about bending, rocking, sharpening, equipment maintance, and a little bit of technique.

Racing started at 8am sharp Sunday morning, we even had our own checkered flag in the spirit of Indiana Racing!

FTSST also implemented for the first time ever, USS’s new Devo Track which is replacing the 85m track. The new Devo Track was easy to implement because it didn’t require any new dots in the ice and the athletes were easily able to adapt to the track since the corners are the same as the 111m track. In total, we had 3 ability groups race on the new Devo Track and it was exciting to see how this challenged their skating skills!

FTSST also ran their first ever Team Event. Our team event is the same format as the Long Track Sprint. 3 people per team, each does 1 lap, then goes wide to let the next skater through, and the fastest time when the 3rd skater finished is the Team’s time. The Team event was won by Northbrook! After the races were over, FTSST hosted an ice cream social! It was a blast to bring everyone back together one last time. A local ice cream business, Kovener’s Korner, donated all of the individual serving sizes of ice cream which made it easy to pass out and enjoy. This also helped keep families engaged at the end of the competition and encouraged them to stay for the award ceremony. FTSST also created a special award for the fastest 500m for the Men & Women which were won by the fastest brother & sister in Indiana: Luis & Maria Marimoto Taqueushi!

FTSST had a blast running their first competition and we wouldn’t have been able to try these fun ideas if it wasn’t for the support of EVERYONE in attendance and behind the scenes for months beforehand. We hope to see even more next year as we build on our new traditions!
