Double Bronze Medal performances conclude the World Championships in Hamar, Norway

It was a busy weekend in Hamar, Norway as the World Sprint and Allround Championships took place from March 3rd-6th, 2022. This competition was based on samalog results; the athlete with the lowest samalog wins the overall title.
The first two days of competition consisted of the World Sprint Championships where athletes skated a total of two 500m and two 1000m races. On the women’s side, Kimi Goetz (Flemington, NJ) kicked off the weekend taking 8th place in the 500m and a Bronze Medal podium finish in the first 1000m. On day two Goetz placed 11th in the 500m and finished just off the podium in the 1000m by crossing the line in 4th place. Goetz finished 5th overall in the 1000m with a samalog total of 153,515.
“[I’m] Happy to have had the opportunity to compete in my third world sprints. It’s one of my favorite competitions and to skate at the rink where Dan Jansen won his Gold is always super motivating,” commented the New Jersey native Kimi Goetz. “Having that little taste of being on the world podium was so fun and hopefully it’s a good momentum builder into the World Cup final this week and also into the next four years.”
For Team USA’s men sprinters, it was Jordan Stolz (Kewasku, WI) who led the way on day one with a 6th place finish in 500m #1 and a top five finish in the first 1000m. Behind Stolz was teammate Austin Kleba (Campton Hills, Il) who finished in 17th and 14th in the first 500m and 1000m. The second day of racing concluded with Stolz finishing in 5th Overall with a total of 139,485 by placing 5th and 4th in the second 500m and 1000m. Kleba rounded out his first World Sprint Championship event by coming in 14th Overall.
The third day of competition kicked off the World Allround Championship competition where Mia Manganello-Kilburg (Crestview, FL) represented Team USA on the women’s side. Her first two events were the 500m where she placed 13th respectively; and the 3000m where she crossed the line in 15th. Her third and final event of the weekend took place on day two where she finished 12th in the 1500m and finished 12th Overall with an overall samalog total of 124,454.
The men of Team USA started off the weekend with the 500m and 5000m where Ethan Cepuran (Glen Ellyn, IL) ranked the highest among the men with a 4th place finish in the 5000m. He was followed by teammates Emery Lehman (Oak Park, IL) and Casey Dawson (Park City, UT) who finished in 10th and 11th. The second day of competition consisted of the 1500m and 10000m where Lehman won the Bronze Medal in the 1500m with a time of 1.46.72. Dawson followed by crossing the line in 9th and Cepuran in 13th. For the 10000m it was Cepuran who competed for Team USA and crossed the line in 8th. Cepuran would also finish in 8th Overall, with an overall samalog total of 153,199. Following close behind was Lehman who placed 9th Overall, and Dawson placing 11th.
“It felt great to be on the podium, especially to share it with two skaters who are so good at the distance. That was definitely my strongest distance I skated that weekend so it felt nice that it was also the one I executed the best,” commented Lehman. “This weekend I’m hoping to build on last weekend and execute just as well, but also just have fun for my last competition at such a cool rink after such a big year.”
The final competition begins next weekend, March 11-13, in The Netherlands with the World Cup Final.
