Anthony Barthell is Back with Team USA

US Speedskating (USS) recently added Anthony Barthell as a Short Track Coach, focusing on athlete equipment. Barthell brings a wealth of knowledge in the area of skate and blade set ups, and will be a key component in helping the skaters with their equipment in preparation for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games.
Barthell rejoins USS after being one of the Head Coaches for the Chinese National Team during the 2019-20 season. Prior to working with the Chinese Team, Barthell was the Head Coach for the US Short Track National Training Program and the Head Coach for the Olympics in 2018. Anthony brings diversity to the team as he was also the first African-American coach to coach a National Training Program; it goes without saying that USS is more than thrilled to have him back!
“I’m happy that Stephen [Gough] is the Head Coach so that we can work together again… along with some athletes that I have previously coached,” commented Barthell. “It’s pretty cool to come back and work with [everyone] again.”
Barthell has a long history of elite level coaching, whether that's on US soil or overseas. In addition to being one of the Head Coaches for the Chinese, he was the Head Coach for the Italian Women’s National Team for a season, and the Head Coach for the Australian National Team for two seasons. Barthell additionally has Olympic experience as he was the Head Coach for the US in 2018, and was even a member of the 2014 US Olympic Team delegation as a Short Track Assistant Coach. To top off his elite level coaching resume, he served as Head Coach of the US Junior World Team from 2012-14, and as Team Leader at the 2013 World Championships.
“Anthony brings a wealth of coaching experience to the team. He knows the group well from his time as Utah Olympic Oval FAST coach and 2018 Olympic Team coach and that familiarity has been valuable given that I am new to the program this season,” raved Head Coach Stephen Gough. “The knowledge and experience he has gained from his time coaching in Australia, Italy, and China will be a real asset and when you consider that he is an expert with short track equipment, I felt it was important to have him working with the US Short Track Program. Having worked with him previously in 2013-14, I know that together we will be able to push the athletes as they work towards their goals in Beijing.”
Barthell, a former skater himself, took up short track speed skating after watching the 2002 Olympic Winter Games which were held in Salt Lake City, UT. In 2006, he relocated to Salt Lake City, and in 2010 was offered a coaching position with the Utah Olympic Oval's FAST program.
Domestic short track competition begins on August 13-15 in Salt Lake City, UT, for the Desert Classic Short Track.
